Mermaid Illustration
This illustration was done for a book of poetry by Alex Ness. I have been doing Robotika by this time for about a year or so and trying to do a single illustration felt weird...but it was fun!

Cool interpretation of a mermaid. Was any of the design from a description in the poem? It seems unusual in a very specific way. Now that I think of it, I think that's one of the strengths of your work. Nothing seems vague or generic. Everything seems to be thought out and done with a clear purpose.
There was nothing particular in the poem that I used for descriptions, however the poem did talk about the fact that the underwater civilization was old and in decline, so the structure in the lower right is somewhat in disrepair and there is nothing high-tech about the props.
I think for me the idea was to try to draw something that was kind of male/female and put the gills where the ribs were...to make more like a fish that the usual.
I am the writer and artist of "Robotika", and an illustrator of "Dark Crystal" comic books, both being published by Archaia Studios Press. This blog, "Moonstruck", is a record of my journey as I work on comics and learn, learn, learn...and learn. Hope you enjoy the pictures :)
